TEMA Engineering won the contract to build and install the flood defence gates, KGAL were rtained by them to develop the functional and detail design of the equipment.
Osprey Quay, in Portland houses the regional coats guard and helicopter rescue service. Portland has a perennial, historic flooding problem and a flood defence scheme was developed by consultants White Young Green in association with the South West Develo
Within the flood defences a stout flood defence wall was built to secure the coast guard site. The wall needed to have an opening capable of allowing the Sea King helicopter to taxi through and yet still be secured in times of flood.
The flood defence gate is of the mitre type with retractable bottom seals. All operations are powered using a hydraulic system based on bio-degradeable oil. The system is controlled directly by P.L.C based electrical controls from a central control panel.
The system incorporated a degree of redundancy to ensure that the probability of being able to clo9se the gates under conditions involving component failure is very high.
The gate incorporated an adjustment system that will enable it to be re-aligned in the future should there be any settlement in the civil engineering.
The gate wa successfully commissioned in 2005.
