Mardyke Sluice Refurbishment

Following a successful tender submission TEMA Engineering were awarded a contract by the Environment Agency for the works required at Mardyke Sluice in Purfleet. The Project included both new build as well as refurbishment.

Guillotine Gate and Penstock - The existing guillotine gate and penstock were installed over 30 years ago and although still in working order required major refurbishment for them to extend their working life for a further 25 years.

Guillotine Gate Guides - As part of the contract it was required that the existing guides were shot blast and painted in situ'. This was carried out by TEMA Engineering painting division with precautions taken to prevent contamination of the water course.

Flap Valves - The two existing flap valves were in disrepair and required replacing with new, these were supplied to TEMA Engineering by Ham Baker and have now been succesfully installed complete with refurbished fairlead assembly and new winches.

Access Bridge and Stairway - The contract included the manufacture, supply and installation of a new access stairway and access bridge to replace the existing ladder arrangement which did not conform to the latest Health and Safety regulations.

Operating Gear - As part of a separate contract TEMA Engineering supplied the machined parts for the operating gear to the EA, These were manufactured at TEMA Engineering Head Office in Briton Ferry.

Installation - The installation of all the equipment was carried out in two stages, both being completed on time to a tight schedule thanks to the professionalism of TEMA Engineering and cooperation of the EA Site Team
